Understanding File Types


These are some basic file types that you will come in contact with when working with clipart, shapes, and pictures.

JPG or JPEG
TIF or TIFF
GIF
PNG
  • smaller file size
  • better format for photos
  • universally recognized
  • most digital cameras save images in this format
  • once the image is compressed, data is lost and cannot be recovered from that image file
  • once the image is compressed, data can be recovered
  • option to save as TIF comes with high-end cameras
  • not widely supported by web browsers
  • widely accepted in the printing industry
  • most widely supported graphics format on the Web
  • supports transparency
  • can create multiple GIF images into a single file to create animation
  • designed specifically for use on Web pages
  • supports 16 million colors
  • lossless compression
  • not yet widely supported
